About

Who We Are MBS Family Farms is a multi‐generation farming operation based in north central Iowa. Stan and Karmen Mehmen started farming together in 1976 and were joined by their son, Kyle and daughter‐in-law, Kerri in 2005. While our core operation is based in Iowa, we also have a strategic farming partnership in south central Minnesota. Our Goal With every decision we make, we ask ourselves these three questions: 1) Do we have a passion for what we are doing? 2) Does it drive our economic engine? 3) Can we be the best in the world at it? The MBS motto: More, Better, Sooner is the driving force to continue moving forward, innovating and improving. We work together to identify and implement strategic plans to improve our delivery of services while ensuring we have the right infrastructure to support responsible growth and expansion. All business is conducted through our commitment to our core values – Family, Integrity, and Professionalism. Successful execution will result in a continuing business legacy. It is the goal of MBS Family Farms to proudly continue to profitably expand our operation while maintaining our reputation for honesty, integrity and hard work. As we strive to grow our operation, we will maintain honesty and integrity in all our dealings and convey a positive image within our communities. We will strive to associate with those who also demonstrate these core beliefs. We consider relationships to be very important, even more vital than operating efficiency and profitability. Our Responsibility MBS Family Farms is committed to conservation, safety and on‐farm security practices. As good stewards of earth’s resources, MBS is committed to preserving and enhancing the soil, water and wildlife. We will continue our third party environmental certification audits on an annual basis and will continue to participate in government conservation stewardship programs. In addition, we are committed to worker safety and on‐farm security measures exceeding standards more exacting than audit requirements. Our Team We know that we would not be where we are today if it were not for our tremendous employees. Each of them bring their own special set of skills and talents to our operation. We have also surrounded ourselves with a board of advisors including lawyers, lenders, crop consultants, financial advisors, marketing specialist, and regulatory officers. As we move forward, we believe it is crucial to fully utilize in our decision-making process our highly competent board of advisors who understand the issues we are dealing with and provide us with the best options available.

Practices

No-Till Planting, Reduced/minimum tillage, crop rotations, annual applications of hog, chicken, and turkey manure as a source of fertilizer, cover crops, variable-rate/reduced-rate fertilizer applications.

Timeline

We have a long history of adopting new conservation/regenerative practices. We started no-till planting soybeans in the early nineties and have progressively tested, scaled, and then fully adopted new practices each year. We first gained access to manure in the late nineties and have added capacity over time. In 2005 we invested in our first variable-rate fertilizer controller and have improved and scaled up our adoption ever since. In 2013 we planted our first cover crops and have been on a learning curve to scale this practice ever since.
