About
Wilson Organic Family Farm is a 7th generation family farm nestled in the Driftless Area of Southwest Wisconsin. An organic farm since 1998, the soil is the base of our ecological farming and stewardship beliefs that food production must occur in sync with nature, wildlife, and the world we share. This philosophy is rooted in our practices from diverse crop rotations that include many diversified perennials to cover cropping and eliminating chemicals and synthetic fertilizers.

Practices | On the Wilson Organic Family Farm, animals share a role in converting perennial forages such as pasture and hay. This process feeds and supports the soil organisms that help sequester carbon and provides additional ecological benefits such as erosion control. In the early 1990s, the farm began converting cropland back into rotationally grazed pastures. In 2018, we adopted regenerative grazing practices that mimic how native prairies were grazed by bison, deer, and other herding animals. This practice provides habitat for pollinators and other wildlife throughout the season as well as captures rainwater and sequesters significant amounts of carbon into the soil. The nutrients provided by the livestock’s manure are a huge asset. These nutrients are strategically applied to the cropland in targeted amounts to minimize runoff loss, improve soil productivity and resilience, and increase soil organic matter (i.e. carbon) and biological activity. |
Timeline | In the last decade, the Wilson Organic Family Farm added new practices and rotations that reduce the frequency and impact of tillage on the cropland. Two examples include extending crop rotations of perennials and adding no-till practices for crops such as soybeans. These practices are in addition to the constant cover goal of having a living plant on the landscape as many days of the year as possible which has successfully led to significant increases in soil organic matter and carbon sequestration. Wilson Organic Family Farm is the first certified organic farm on the Nori marketplace and is excited to be able to recognize the carbon captured and retained by organic farming methods. |
