Harborview Farms is working to bring some game-changing new ideas to farming. How? By approaching farming as a creative endeavor, exploring new techniques, and connecting dots in new ways that others aren’t willing to try.

At Harborview, we believe farmland isn’t a commodity to be used up, it’s a canvas on which to create something new, meaningful and effective. And we’ll continue working hard to see what new things we can discover with it.

Willis Farms Inc. is a multigenerational family owned and operated farming operation ideally situated in southern middle Tn. Through hard work, innovation, and a little luck the farm has grown over the last 70 years to encompass almost 4000 acres of productive cropland and pasture. We focus on taking care of the land first, using regenerative and sustainable methods on every acre under our care.

Our regenerative agriculture journey started in the late 80’s with No-till. This was done to minimize erosion and multiple trips across each field. After finding success there we started to dabble in variable rate fertility. In 2012 we broke a few fields up into zones based on similar agronomic properties such as soil type, topography, electroconductivity and historical yield. We base our fertilizer applications on the targeted needs of these zones. This practice led to a 30% reduction in fertilizer application vs the traditional method, so we implemented it on every acre we farm.

Next, around 2014 we started experimenting with cover crops. It started out with a single field planted in a single species and has since grown to every acre we can feasibly cover before it gets too cold or wet planted in a multi species mix.

After making some adjustments to our timing and seeding rates, we now plant in a specific order so we can harvest a few hundred acres early enough to plant our cover crop. These fields are grazed off and on by Good Animal Practice certified cows and calves until we are ready to plant our cash crops the next spring.

None of these things by themselves moves the needle but together, as a system, we are beginning to see real benefits. Our overall yields have increased while using less fertilizer. We can withstand drought conditions due to cooler soil temperatures. Periods of torrential rain don’t cut ditches or create standing water because our soil acts more like a sponge. Our cattle are fed a diverse nutritionally dense diet without us having to take hay or grain to them.

Implementing these practices comes with its challenges. We have had to change when we plant, which has in turn changed when we harvest. We have built fences around crop fields so we can graze them. Our planters are set up to deal with new planting conditions. We’ve sown cover crop differently every year since we started. Through all this though, we feel we are on the right track. We are farming productively while enriching our soil and sinking carbon.

But we’re still trying to figure out what’s next.


Willis Farms, Inc.

Miltrim Farms was started in 1988 by Martin Mueller, Tom Mueller, and Scott Trimner. Our venture started when these three purchased a 300 cow dairy farm a few miles down the road from the original home farm. As the dairy grew over the years, so did our aspirations and ability to try new and innovative ideas. 

Today, we milk 3000 cows which include 1,800 cows milked in 30 Lely robots. Alongside the cows, we also crop 5,200 acres used to grow perennial forages and corn for silage and grain to feed the cows. 

Our carbon journey started 8 years ago experimenting with rye as a cover crop after corn silage harvest. As time progressed, we continued to see a need to further improve our soil practices due to the many surface and groundwater issues that our home state of Wisconsin was facing. Today we have greatly changed the way we look at and handle our soil and water resources. Our goal is to have a living root structure on all of our acres 365 days a year. We accomplish this by using a perennial forage rotation alongside cover cropping on our corn acres. Whether it is interseeding a multiple species mix in between the corn rows, or planting a cereal rye post-harvest, this allows for soil health to flourish and carbon to be continually taken into the ground after harvest. We are continuing to learn and improve our practices in order to foster better soil health which provides better yields and a stronger resiliency to changing weather patterns, all while capturing and storing excess carbon into the soil. 

David Trimner

Petersen Farms has been around for over 100 years. We are a very progressive farm utilizing the latest technology for better efficiency. We practice no-till and strip-till, where we don't disturb the soil. We find that with less disturbance of soils, our yields have improved. This also means less passes across the field with equipment, which takes less workforce, less fuel and fewer hours on our equipment. The last couple of years we have started using cover crops. We believe that it will help with soil health by keeping plants growing year round. Our farm is always looking for ways to be more efficient and environment-friendly.
