Miltrim Farms was started in 1988 by Martin Mueller, Tom Mueller, and Scott Trimner. Our venture started when these three purchased a 300 cow dairy farm a few miles down the road from the original home farm. As the dairy grew over the years, so did our aspirations and ability to try new and innovative ideas. 

Today, we milk 3000 cows which include 1,800 cows milked in 30 Lely robots. Alongside the cows, we also crop 5,200 acres used to grow perennial forages and corn for silage and grain to feed the cows. 

Our carbon journey started 8 years ago experimenting with rye as a cover crop after corn silage harvest. As time progressed, we continued to see a need to further improve our soil practices due to the many surface and groundwater issues that our home state of Wisconsin was facing. Today we have greatly changed the way we look at and handle our soil and water resources. Our goal is to have a living root structure on all of our acres 365 days a year. We accomplish this by using a perennial forage rotation alongside cover cropping on our corn acres. Whether it is interseeding a multiple species mix in between the corn rows, or planting a cereal rye post-harvest, this allows for soil health to flourish and carbon to be continually taken into the ground after harvest. We are continuing to learn and improve our practices in order to foster better soil health which provides better yields and a stronger resiliency to changing weather patterns, all while capturing and storing excess carbon into the soil.

Petersen Farms has been around for over 100 years. We are a very progressive farm utilizing the latest technology for better efficiency. We practice no-till and strip-till, where we don't disturb the soil. We find that with less disturbance of soils, our yields have improved. This also means less passes across the field with equipment, which takes less workforce, less fuel and fewer hours on our equipment. The last couple of years we have started using cover crops. We believe that it will help with soil health by keeping plants growing year round. Our farm is always looking for ways to be more efficient and environment-friendly.
